Mauritania issues new series and redenominates

The Banque Central de Mauritanie has issued a new series of banknotes on 1 January 2018. The new series has the following denominations: 50-, 100-, 200-, 500- and 1000-ougiyas. This shows that they've had a redenomination at a rate of 1:10.

The redemption of the current notes, which will cease to be legal tender at the end of the year, will happen in the following tranches:

  • 5,000-ougiya until 31 January 2018
  • 2,000-ougiya until 28 February 2018
  • 1,000-ougiya until 30 March 2018
  • 500-ougiya until 30 June 2018
  • 200-ougiya until 30 June 2018
  • 100-ougiya until 30 June 2018

All the old notes will cease to be legal tender on 30 June 2018, and will lose all value at the end of 2018.

The new notes aren't exactly show stoppers but they're alright with traditional themes and colors:
